Prevention
As the saying goes; "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Creating a workplace atmosphere that fosters respect and does not allow for discrimination and harassment is the best way to prevent issues.
Remember earlier when we talked about Impact vs. Intent. Prevention means focusing on the impact of jokes, statements, and actions. Do not disregard these things as something to not be taken seriously. When people focus on the intent, it allows for the creation of a hostile work environment.
Here are some guidelines to avoid committing unwelcome behavior:
- Think before acting. Act in ways that bring credit to yourself, the agency, and the public we serve.
- Respect the people around you and especially respect their indication that conduct or attention is unwelcome.
- Be sensitive to diverse perspectives and feelings.
- Exercise common courtesy.
- Think twice before making a joke.
- Do not invade another's personal space.
- Clearly inform those engaging in offensive behavior that you find it objectionable.
