Detailed Description and Purpose of the IPE Experience

Teams of learners will participate in a health screening for community members attending a Business Mercado. Hosted by the Abilene Chamber Hispanic Business Council, Business Mercado (Market) is an annual showcase of business products and services with the intent of building the bridge between consumers in the Abilene community. Open to all businesses, this high energy, family friendly event hosts community engagement activities throughout the day, including health screenings for anyone attending the Business Mercado. This IPE experience aims to improve community health outcomes while providing learners the opportunity to collaborate on various health screenings. Interprofessional collaborative care is a strategic component of many community engagement activities, offering a valuable chance for interprofessional learning. As teams of students from different professions work side-by-side, they address community challenges together, gaining insights into the community, including its assets, and developing trusting collaborative care relationships. They also learn about social determinants of health, the importance of flexibility, and the value of a long-term commitment to community engagement.

Health services may include blood pressure screening, blood sugar measurement, immunizations, and health education. This learning experience aims to foster collaborative efforts among health professions students to serve an underserved population, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of each other's roles and the importance of interprofessional communication in coordinating a large community event.

This interprofessional community engagement event includes:

Interprofessional Pre-Event Huddle: Students will review roles and responsibilities, teamwork strategies, and values/ethics related to the patient population. They will then work together to prepare their screening area and plan with their team.

Interprofessional Community Engagement Event: Interprofessional student teams will be administering health services and screenings, counseling patients and families on the results, providing recommendations and information about additional resources, and offering health education on prevention and safety.

Feedback and Survey: After the event, students will engage in a facilitated debrief with peer feedback, discussing reflection questions related to interprofessional practice and education.
